Emotional Attachments

Trying to organize can become difficult if you find you have emotional attachments to "things" you are trying to simplify or declutter. In a previous conversation with April, she mentioned a few key ideas that I think can help you.

First, when you are looking at the item, ask yourself, "Is this something I would buy for myself?"

If the answer is yes, go for it, use the piece or item for its intended purpose, and enjoy it!

If not, then take a picture and make a scrapbook of the items you wouldn't find useful.  Then you can decide whether to throw it away, donate it, or sell it.  Make a pile for each, and then you have an organized way to sort through all of the items.  Parting with an item doesn't mean you are parting with the memory!

She used the example of some sheet music her Mom loved. April never used it or played it, but had a large amount of it just sitting in a box. Instead of keeping the big box of sheet music, she scanned her Mom's favorites and put them in Evernote as a keepsake, so she wouldn't need to keep the actual originals.

We also have a couple of podcasts that may be helpful to you. https://learndobecome.com/episode19/ and https://learndobecome.com/episode67/ Don't let the titles concern you. :) We won't be asking you to throw everything away.

For a more in-depth way to set up projects on deciding what to keep, I highly encourage you to check out one of our STEP programs! We have a 60-day money-back guarantee, and we would love for you to jump in and make sure it is a great fit for your life!

I hope this was helpful, and best wishes as you move forward with this big project. Just take it one day at a time.

Have a great day!!!
